Understanding Lemon Juice in Sugar Paste
What does lemon juice actually do in sugar paste? We explore its role in the formula and why the full ingredient picture matters when considering performance, skin compatibility, and client experience.
Hair growth may seem straightforward—but beneath the skin’s surface, it’s a surprisingly complex process. Each strand of hair follows a cycle of growth, rest, and shedding, and at any given time, different hairs on the body are in different stages of that cycle—even within the same region of skin.
Understanding this cycle is essential for sugarists. Why? Because removing hair during the optimal stage of growth can improve results, extend smoothness, and even lead to long-term hair reduction with regular treatments.
Let’s break it down.
The four stages of the hair growth cycle can be remembered by the acronym ACTE:
Anagen (Active Growth)
Catagen (Transitional Phase)
Telogen (Resting Phase)
Exogen (Shedding Phase)
This is the ideal stage for sugaring.
During anagen, the hair follicle is actively producing new hair. The root is deeply attached and nourished by the blood supply in the dermis, and the hair is still anchored inside the follicle. When removed during this stage, the hair comes out more completely and with minimal breakage.
Duration: Varies by body part (e.g., scalp: 2–6 years, underarms: ~4 months)
% of hairs in anagen: Varies (e.g., scalp: ~85%, legs: ~20%)
Sugaring note: The more consistently a body area is sugared, the higher the percentage of hairs that will sync into anagen over timeSugarists-Rebooking-Gui….
This is a brief “reset” phase. The hair has stopped growing and begins to detach from its blood supply, but it hasn’t yet fallen out. The follicle shrinks and prepares for the next growth cycle.
Duration: About 2–3 weeks
Sugaring note: Hairs in this stage are often harder to extract cleanly because they are loosening but not yet fully shed. Results may be less predictable.
The follicle is dormant, and the hair is fully detached from the follicle base. The hair may still be visible at the skin’s surface but is no longer rooted in the skin.
Duration: Several weeks to months depending on the body part
Sugaring note: Since the root is no longer attached, these hairs may shed naturally or fall out with minimal effort. Removing these via sugaring may give less consistent long-term reduction results.
Exogen is sometimes considered a part of telogen, but it specifically refers to the release of the hair from the follicle. It’s the moment the hair actually sheds—often pushed out by a new anagen hair forming underneath.
Duration: Days to weeks
Sugaring note: Shedding hairs may appear to regrow quickly after sugaring, but it’s often just a new hair emerging from the follicle, not a failure of the treatment.
As a sugarist, understanding hair growth cycles helps you:
Time rebookings effectively — targeting clients when the majority of hairs are in the anagen phase improves extraction and results.
Educate clients — especially if they’re frustrated with regrowth speed or patchy results.
Support long-term outcomes — regular sugaring can train hairs to grow in sync, increasing the number of hairs in anagen during each appointment.
Underarms and bikini: Rebook every 2–4 weeks for best results.
Legs and arms: Rebook every 4–8 weeks, depending on growth speed and density.
Hair growth is dynamic, cyclical, and affected by genetics, hormones, health, environment, and even stress. While sugaring can’t override biology, it can work in harmony with the body’s natural rhythms—especially when performed regularly and with the stages of hair growth in mind.
When clients understand this cycle, they’re more likely to stick to a rebooking schedule—and more likely to get the smooth, long-lasting results they’re after.
