Let’s be honest. Ingrown hairs can be a pain! We all want smooth, hair-free skin without any hassle! Unfortunately, ingrowns hairs can complicate this goal, especially when we are shaving or waxing. Good news! There are specific ways to reduce the number of ingrown hairs you get by following proper aftercare instructions and by switching to sugaring!
Why Sugaring is Great for Ingrown Hair Prevention
Sugaring removes hair using a mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and water. These ingredients are combined and heated to create a sticky paste. This paste is applied to the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth. The technician then flicks the sugar paste off in the direction of growth, removing the hair with it. Removing the hair in this manner results in less pressure on the hair shaft, and consequently to less breakage. Breakage is one of the key factors contributing to ingrown hairs. The flick of a properly trained, experienced sugarist minimizes this breakage. Sugaring is also one of the most gentle techniques for removing unwanted body hair. It offers many benefits and advantages (read more about these advantages here!). One of these advantages is that the sugaring paste will remove loose, dead skin cells while leaving functional cells completely untouched. It therefore acts as an exfoliant that will leave you feeling silky smooth.
What Causes Ingrown Hairs?
An ingrown hair occurs when your hair curls or grows sideways into the epidermis. Although this is more common for people with curly hair, anyone can get an ingrown. Ingrown hairs generally pop up in areas that have been shaved or poorly waxed, due to a damaged follicle or root, or from the hair being cut/broken unevenly. Ingrown hairs can also happen when hair is too weak to break through the skin cells that are blocking it’s way to the surface. This is typically due to a buildup of dead skin cells, so exfoliating can be a huge preventative measure.
Aftercare For Ingrowns
Exfoliate. This is and will always be the best way to prevent possible ingrowns. The product that our sugarists and their clients love using is our exfoliating Soap Bars. Our exfoliating soap bar is to be enjoyed 48 hours after sugaring. It is loaded with ground loofah to exfoliate away dry, loose skin cells, and to scour away anything that might be clogging your pores.
Always do your best to frequently apply our Tonic and Lotion combo to the newly sugared skin. Tonic and Lotion should be applied immediately after a treatment to promote healing and closing of the follicle and to keep the skin adequately moisturized. Use liberally and frequently! Lastly, SugarSMAC also has a last line of defense against ingrown hairs, our SugarSMAC Ingrown Serum. Our Ingrown Serum is a spot treatment that explicitly targets ingrown hairs by gently exfoliating and removing dead skin that may be preventing hair from growing properly. This can be used on any ingrown hairs, to help them break the skin, and also to assist them in healing faster.
Following these simple instructions, and switching to sugaring hair removal, will help ingrown hairs be a thing of the past!
