Sugaring and laser hair removal are both popular forms of hair removal. They each have their pros and cons to consider, and each one is better suited for different groups of people. We hope to make this decision a little easier by walking you through the pros and cons of both, so you can decide which is right for you!
What is Sugaring?
Sugaring removes hair using a mixture of sugar, lemon juice, and water. These ingredients are combined and warmed to create a sticky paste. This paste is applied to the skin in the opposite direction of hair growth. The technician then flicks the sugar paste off in the direction of growth, removing the hair with it. It is one of the most gentle techniques for removing unwanted body hair.

What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure in which a beam of light is concentrated at the hair follicle. This light is converted to energy when it contacts melanin in the hair. This energy is in the form of heat and will damage the hair follicle. Typically, laser treatments begin with six monthly sessions. Follow up treatments can then be scheduled as needed.
Who can get sugaring?
Almost anyone can get sugaring done on most parts of the body. However, some medications may prevent you from being sugared. There are also a few minor stipulations to being sugared, such as no tanning within 24 hours, and no working-out (sweating) after your appointment. To see the full list, please check out our blog on Sugaring Contraindications.
Who can get laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal is best for people with light skin and dark hair. Those with light skin and light hair are not candidates for laser hair removal and will not experience much difference in hair growth. Though people with dark skin and dark hair can get laser, they will not receive the same positive results as those with light skin and dark hair.

Discomfort Levels
The discomfort levels of sugaring and laser can vary greatly depending on the person receiving the treatment. Some clients do not experience any pain from sugaring, while some do. Whatever your pain tolerance may be, it is well known that with consistent sugaring, each appointment will be less painful than the last. The area of the body on which you are getting laser hair removal will affect the level of discomfort you will feel. Many people describe laser as ‘having an elastic band snapped on your skin continuously.’ If you find the pain to be overwhelming, your technician will be able to turn the machine to a lower setting.
Risk
Sugaring has very little side effects. The gentle nature of the procedure makes it very safe. Occasionally, a histamine reaction may occur. The area, in this case, will remain red for a day or two after sugaring. Typically, this will go away on its own or can be treated with a light moisturizer, a cold compress, and an antihistamine. Before any self-treatment, it is best to consult with a doctor.
Laser hair removal has multiple possible side effects. The most common is skin irritation, which will go away on its own. Another potential side effect is pigment changes of the skin. The skin around the area treated may be lightened or darkened, often temporarily, but in rare cases, this can be permanent. When done improperly, laser can also lead to burning, blistering, crusting, or scarring. For this reason, it is very important to ensure you are going to a well-trained specialist.
Cost
Sugaring is rather inexpensive, and typically a salon will charge even less for appointments that are kept on a regular schedule. Sugaring will reduce hair growth over time. Although you will usually need to continue with regular sugaring appointments, they will become less and less often as your hair growth reduces.
Laser is quite an expensive procedure upfront. However, this is balanced out by the fact that laser will last a long time. Keep in mind that it is a common misconception that laser treatments will lead to permanency. You will always need to go back for maintenance appointments.
How Sugaring and Laser Can Work Together
Sugaring and laser hair removal can work together exceptionally well. Even after completing your initial laser treatments, you will always have some hair regrowth. At this point, it may be worth considering sugaring for your hair removal needs. Many sugaring clients have received laser hair removal in the beginning and then switched to sugaring for maintenance.
Whatever method you decide to go with is entirely up to you. Each method has its pros and cons. We hope that this blog has made your decision between sugaring and laser hair removal a little easier.
